Launched in mid-2023 and with over 200 million users, Threads is the new social media platform to watch. This app allows users to share short-form text posts, similar to X/Twitter. Threads is designed to be a place for having real-time conversations, political debates, and sharing personal thoughts.

Now, since its launch, Threads has been adding a lot of features. Arguably, its most prominent feature is “tagging”, and no, it’s not tagging someone in a picture or a post, and also no, it’s not exactly the same as hashtagging on Instagram (even though they are similar). We’ll explain everything related to Tagging on Threads in this blog.

How do you Tag in the Threads App?

Using this feature is fairly easy to do, simply click on the # symbol and start typing (the hashtag symbol will disappear and your text will be in blue). Now as you start typing, previously made tags will appear. You can either choose from the list, or create your new tag by selecting “+ Tag new topic” when you have your phrase ready.

There you have it, now your post has a tag that is related to your topic. Now, would you like to add more tags? Well, you can’t.** Each post on Threads can have one tag**, and one tag only. To understand why, we need to know the answer to the next question.

So What Is Tagging in Threads, Exactly?

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram and Threads, explains it this way (and we’re paraphrasing from this post):

“Tags are something simple and new. There are no hashtag signs, and there is only one tag per post. Remember, the tag view _is _the search view.”

Now, why not have as many tags or hashtags as one wants, like instagram? Well, Mosseri says their hope is that this design will prevent engagement hacking, and will help foster healthier conversations on the platform. We couldn’t agree more!

Use your Thread’s Tag Wisely!

Tagging on Threads can help users discover new content and connect with like-minded people. It’s one of the ways you can grow your threads’ visibility. Basically tagging is like designating your post to a specific topic. Meaning, you are categorizing your thread and your post may be shown to people with similar interests. So, take your chance and tag wisely!

Now back to the real question.

What is the difference between Tags in Threads and Hashtags on Instagram?

Well, there are a couple.

  1. On Threads, You can have one tag per post, whereas on Instagram you can have many hashtags in a post.
  2. With Thread’s tags, you can have a phrase, not just a word. This means you can include spaces in your tag. For example “Fitness Motivation” can be a tag on Threads, but on Instagram these are the possible variations for a post #fitness #motivation #fitnessmotivation
  3. You can include special characters in your Tag in the Threads app.
